What is Medical Massage?

                                        Scottsdale Medical Massage Therapy

Pain from accidents, injuries, sprains/strains, repetitive motion, poor posture and physical stress send millions of people to their doctors each year.  This problem is often seated in the soft tissues of the body which are one of the most overlooked and underestimated causes of pain.  Medical Massage Therapy is a clinically based approach that utilizes the focused application of advanced manual therapy techniques to treat specific conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by your physician.  It is performed by a therapist with advanced knowledge, training & experience in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain & injury.  Medical Massage Therapy offers a beneficial form of rehabilitative medicine in conjunction with physical therapy and/or chiropractic treatment for full recovery from your injury.  Medical Massage can often be as or even more effective in treating muscular and other soft tissue injuries than either of these traditional methods.

What is the difference between "Medical Massage" and "Therapeutic Massage?
Therapeutic massage is generally performed by therapists working in a spa or membership based clinic and is described as a general "feel-good" massage.  Many times the jargon and buzzwords used to describe various types of massage treatments can imply a medically based approach.  However, this is usually not the case.  Regular massage therapists, while competent and well-trained in relaxation based massage, generally lack both the knowledge and experience to safely and effectively treat specific musculoskeletal injuries and disorders.  Most initial massage education programs do not include adequate coursework in health and medical sciences which are needed to gain expertise in these areas.  This can be achieved only through higher education in advanced concepts and technique coupled with years of experience.  Medical Massage therapists utilize a comprehensive and individualized approach to administer a range of safe and effective techniques to help improve your condition at your specific stage of healing.

How can Medical Massage help me?
The soft tissues of the body include muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, joint capsules and nerves.  In most cases, these tissues are the primary culprit that causes pain and dysfunction and can be easily and effectively treated with a comprehensive plan utilizing Medical Massage.  Typically, I can eliminate your pain permanently in only a few visits by releasing chronically tight (hypertonic) tissues and restoring proper muscular health and balance to your body.  In other cases, I may be able to only reduce your pain, perhaps enough to allow you to avoid surgery or other invasive procedures.  Even if you've had poor results with massage or other treatments in the past, don't feel you have to suffer endlessly with no options.  I've helped hundreds of patients recover completely from soft tissue pain, injuries, restricted motion and many other disorders.  I encourage you to make an appointment and experience the difference Medical Massage can make.

Will insurance pay for Medical Massage treatment?
The short answer to this question is....YES!   In all cases, a prescription for Medical Massage with a specific diagnosis from your physician is required for insurance coverage.  Typically, medical massage treatment for injuries sustained in an auto accident or work related incident will be covered under the associated insurance policy.  Please note:  Our office does not directly bill your insurance company or accept medical liens against future insurance settlements.  We will be happy to provide you with a receipt and the procedure codes necessary for you to submit your own claim to insurance for reimbursement of charges incurred.

If you participate in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), your tax-free contributions to the plan can be used for qualified medical expenses not normally covered by health insurance, including Medical Massage treatment.  Although not always necessary, I recommend asking for a prescription from your physician for FSA/HSA approval.  A prescription for Medical Massage ensures that your treatment will be considered medically necessary.  Some FSA/HSA programs provide a debit/credit card to use for payment of medical expenses which deducts the funds directly from your account.  If this is not the case for you, I will be happy to provide a detailed receipt for you to submit a claim for reimbursement of charges.  Click here to read more about Flexible Spending Accounts and Massage Therapy.

At this time, we do not directly submit claims to health insurance due to the inconsistency of coverage for Medical Massage.  Healthcare is rapidly changing, however.  Insurance companies in several states (ie: FL & WA) include Medical Massage as a covered benefit on most policies.  Additionally, many
other insurance policies offer special provisions, discounts or add-on coverage for massage and other complementary treatments.  I encourage clients to check with their health insurance provider to see if benefits are available and/or file for reimbursement of treatment fees.  Even if your claim is denied, each submission increases insurance company awareness of the medical necessity and proven benefits of receiving massage therapy.

**The reality is that, when compared to the cumulative costs of copays, deductibles, insurance premiums and prescriptions for conventional "solutions", the out of pocket costs for most alternative care treatments like massage therapy are much less expensive and often much more effective!
